Circular Needle Caddy

This project is much easier than you might think. Before you get started you'll need the following:

  • 2 "Fat Quarters" in any fabric you like, something in a more rigid and non-stretchy fabric is best.
  • 12-18" cording
  • 12" wooden rod, about 1/2" wide or a plastic tubular hanger
  • Any embellishments and thread you like
  • Sewing machine
  • Beaded fringe

Actually, you don't need a sewing machine, you could do all the stitching by hand, but the machine makes things a lot easier. For the fabric, I recommend going to any store that supports quilters -- these stores will sell pre-cut fat quarters. Pick any two that make you happy. Remember, the one on the back won't be seen very often, so you don't necessarily need to pick something flashy for the second one.

1. Iron the creases out of both pieces of fabric.

2. Lay one of the fabric pieces down with the "right" side up. Fold the fabric in half so that the wrong side is facing you.

3. Stitch evenly around the open edges about 1/2" away from the edge, being sure to leave an area unsewn (see picture below). You will need this opening so that you can turn the fabric right-side out.

4. Repeat for second piece of fabric.

5. Turn both pieces right side out and iron. Sew closed open area.

6. Place the piece that will be on the front face (right side) down. Place the back piece on top and center it on the front piece. Pin the pieces together.

7. Flip the pieces over. With a tape measure and a chalk pencil, start at what you would like to be the top edge. Make a mark 1.5" from the top. Continue to mark at 1.5" intervals down to the bottom as in picture below.

8. If you are going to use a tubular hanger to hang the caddy, do not sew the top edges together yet. If you are going to use a wooden rod, go ahead and sew the top edges.

9. Sew across the fabric pieces as in the lines in the picture. If you wish to embellish the caddy with ribbons, you can do this as you sew across. Some sewing machines have wonderful stitch patterns built in if you want a neat pattern without worrying about positioning ribbon.

10. If you want to sew on the beaded fringe, place it between the two fabric layers at the bottom before sewing the two bottom edges together.

11. If you are going to hang it with a tubular hanger, now is the time to put the long edge of the hanger between the top open edges, and then sew the top edges together -- you're done! Otherwise, slip your wooden rod into the top slot in the caddy.

12. Make sure that the ends of your rod have a hole drilled in them large enough to accomodate your cording.

13. Insert the cording into the holes at the end of the rods and knot the cording under the rod to hold it in place.

14. Hang in an easy to access place and sort your circular needles!
