Hello all, I have a question for those who have been there already about the armhole shaping for the front and back. For sizes S, M and XL, you begin the piece with K0, then P2, K2, etc. So when you get to the armhole, unlike the instructions for the sleeves in my size, casting off 5 results in an uneven number of stitches for the next row, where I am directed to P2, K2, P1, P2tog, rib to end, &c. In other words, for P2, I am purling one purl stitch, and purling one knit stitch, and so on, for the first 7 stitches. Is this an error? Should I just slavishly follow the directions and hope it looks okay?
And looking ahead to the neck edging, my other question is, whatsa yfrn? I know what a yfwd is, but yfrn is a new one. Rowan doesn't even define it on the information page.
I'm otherwise having a great time with this sweater--yarn, pattern, color (I chose the coral), everything. I can't wait to post a picture with me in it!
Just follow the instructions blindly. Trust me. I just went through the same anguish? confusion? chaos? I was convinced that the pattern had an error in it & kept trying to do it the "right way". It looked like crap. After knitting & ripping several times, I gave up & followed the pattern as it is written. Bingo. It all comes together after after a few rows.
Posted by: Samina at May 30, 2004 07:05 PMThank you! I will do just what it says. (And I meant size XS, not S, on my post, not to confuse anyone doing size S.) Now if someone will enlighten me on yfrn, all will be well with my world!

I thought I'd share my experience, because I had the SAME problem you did in making the medium. I want the sleeve armholes to look just like the front/back armholes, but the way I did the increases (two stitches in from the edge) on the sleeve meant that if I followed the directions the decreases were NOT right.
I decided to cast off 4 instead of 5 each time and then I ended up with 40 stitches instead of 38 but it has not mattered in the fit of the sweater. In doing this, the decreases looked just like the front/back. If you want me to explain better, email me!
yfrn is "yarn forward around needle" - it is just a yarn over where you purl the next stitch - you yarn over and end with the yarn in front to purl the next one (or p2tog, or slip, whatever). Both yfrn and yfwd are just yarn overs...

I lost your email but wanted to say "Good luck!" on your sleeves; show a pic when you're done; I'd like to see how it goes for you.
