The start of something pretty

Finally, after frogging my first attempts at the darts, I think I finally have got it now. ( I'm still decreasing)

I'm purling the marked st on the RS, and knitting the marked st on the WS. So far, it looks like the decreases Julie did. (Thanks Julie...and thanks for your suggestion in my previous post).

I've been thinking, tell me what y'all think. I'm thinking about not doing the darts on the back side. Am I a wimp, or what?

Hi Kate, You HAVE to do the shaping the same way on the front and the back - otherwise the pieces really won't fit together properly and it will look wrong. Once you've figured out how to do the decreases and increases this shouldn't be a problem. Try to look at it as a new skill rather than a bother. If you are going to continue to knit garments that aren't just square, you have to learn to do the shaping. This is good practice. You've got it now. Press on! You can do it!

Julie,

I didn't think about that. I guess there isn't really any other place to put the decreases and increases without making the ribbing look awkward. So, darts it'll have to be.
Thanks for the alert.

you need to do darts or decreasing somehow or you will lose the beauty of pattern & its shaping. Check out Becky's blog & discussion as she did the decreases on the edge & her sweater looks fabulous. I think her website is skinnyrabbit.com

Hi Kate, I thought you were going to omit the shaping altogether, which you really can't do. Technically, if you do the increases and decreases on the same rows on the front and back the pieces will fit no matter where you place them, but I would still opt for making both pieces identical, as that is what will look the best. I don't think you're going to save yourself any labor by decreasing further out, it will just look different aesthetically. If you want to go with a different method, rip and start again. And by the way, it's JuliA. :) Good luck! Can't wait to see it finished!
