Ha'ena Beach

This is a view of Ha'ena Beach, looking east. Ha'ena Beach is just west of the Limahuli Gardens and has surfing spots to either side of the main beach. The high surf that hits around this beach draws surfers in from all over the island. Just to the west of this beach is the "Cannons" a well known surfing spot.

Plumaria Blossoms

While newer varietals of the plumaria tree have been developed that are ever green and ever blooming, the original plant has a cycle much like deciduous trees on the mainland. It loses some of its leaves and all its flowers in the winter and does not flower in the winter months. These small blooms were some of the last remaining flowers on this tree. And they smelled lovely.

Kokio Keokeo

This lovely flower is a native Kauaian hibscus species that the Limahuli Garden is working to preserve. And it seems like one of the garden's success stories, given the number of plants in the upland area we were walking in. It is not only lovely to look at, but also has a lovely light fragrance.

While this lichen wasn't an official guest of the garden, it was a lovely representative of its type, seen all over moist rocky areas in Kauai.

This is one of Kauai's few true native plants. It's lack of chemical and physical defenses makes it easy prey for the islands herbivorous animals.

Octopus Tree on Rock

The Octopus Tree (also known as a Schefflera) is a dangerously invasive species in Hawaii, in particular in Kauai. It hails from Australia and is a fairly common houseplant in most of the US. They are dangerous because they can grow almost anywhere (note that this one is perched on a rock) and their roots can easily choke out other plants. I think this one is kept as an example of how they can grow.
