Onde Way

I really just can't resist the bad puns that come to my head when I hear the name of this yarn. So I hope I'll be forgiven. With any luck, I'll run out of them before I complete this sweater -- and the one I hope to make for John.

I did hit a major milestone with my Phil'Onde sweater -- I completed the back.

This yarn has a lot more character when the picture is taken outside in the sunshine. I think this green has in it the essence of spring, and the morning sun makes it more apparent. The fabric itself is also light and airy and, dare I say it, springy. Here's a little closeup of the texture of the Phil'Onde knit in K4P2 rib on 5 mm needles:

It's a boucle yarn, so I gave up on completely neat and pretty. From a distance, though, all you see is the lovely gradient and the nice wide ribbing.

I've cast on for the first sleeve tonight. I want to see how far one of the gradiant balls goes so I can figure out if I need to find another ball of white. It would be just dreadful to be a few rows from finishing the second sleeve and not have enough white yarn!

I'm not sure yet, but this sweater may be one of the projects I take with me to Maryland Sheep and Wool on Friday along with the Mermaid socks. I can hardly wait to get on the plane and make the treck to one of the premier festivals in the US, especially since I know I am going to be in great company.

I bought enough Phil'Onde to make myself a T3 (from Knitty) but I swatched it up twice and found I'm just not enjoying it. I doubt I'll ever finish my shirt if I use this yarn because I don't like the knitting and it's a pretty small gauge for me, so I've decided to return all but the skein I swatched with. Bummer, because I love the way it looks so much. I bought the navy-to-light blue one.

It looks really, really nice. I'm nearly persuaded to import yarn in the orange/purple colourway for myself....not quite there yet.

Well if that isn't the springtimeyest sweater I've seen. What beautiful colors--I love that chlorophylle and blanc! I feel French just thinking about them.

Dumb question: I've never seen a Phildar pattern but keep seeing sweaters online that I admire. Are they written in French?

Have a fantastic time this weekend! Your Onde looks beautiful... I can't wait to get the rest of the yarn needed for mine. Hopefully I'll see you at KIP next week!

Bring it! I would love to see the green in person. Sil is bringing her purple one...and it might even be finished. Should I ask her to bring her left-over white for you??

OOhLala - that color is turning out way yummy. The only thing I'm bringing to MDS&W is my Onde and the Broadripple socks! I hope to get a TON O'ONDE DONE!

It's soooo pretty! I have to say that I'm not such a fan of the Onde yarn, but the color you've chosen is changing my mind. I like where the fade happened too. Is there a way of controlling that at all? It seems to fall in different places in different sweaters.

Re: Phildar patterns: The books you order from Knit n Tyme have English translation inserts in them that go along with the French originals. So you don't have to learn French to read the patterns.

I think the way you do fade control is simply by width and gauge. The reason all the sweaters you've seen are different is because there's almost no consistent gauge amongst them! I got gauge on 5.0 mm needles for this project. I think Bonne Marie's working with 3.5 mm needles. I like the fade better this way, too. The first ball ended just below the armhole bindoffs (there's white at the end of the big skeins).

This green turned out to be something of a surprise for me too! All the websites where I saw color made it look much more Shreky and much less springy. It was a very pleasant surprise when it showed up all bright and happy from France!

This colour is so pretty! I just found a LYS out our way that carries a few of the colours, but I didn't see the green there. I'm thinking of the pink to orange shades for youngest daughter - but want to show her the yarn first. At 15 yrs, you just never know...

I love your blog, btw - I've been reading for awhile, but this is the first time I've posted a comment.

Dont worry if you need an extra skein of the white Onde, I have a whole one (minus a couple of yards) that I have no idea what do to with. I'll send it over if you need it..

That sure is a bright and beautiful shade of green! Hope you have a fun weekend and Maryland.
