Video Game Knitting

For those of you not fortunate to share a house with your own personal geek boy, you may not be aware of the big event geek boys around the world are celebrating: the release of Doom 3. In my house, this event has been one requiring the update of video cards and other supporting hardware so that our home theatre room (a.k.a. the Den Of Great Manliness) can be transformed into the ultimate gaming location.

I am not quite geek girl enough to want to play the game myself. Long ago I gave up on ever having the hand eye co-ordination required for a career in professional gaming. But I am geek girl enough to want to see the game played, look at the new technology, see what story gets told. In fact, it's one of my odd quirks (I have many), that I would rather sit and watch John play a video game than watch a movie.

So tonight I finished off the front of the Lucky Ruban Top to the sounds of gunfire, zombies and screaming combatants on Mars. Not a bad evening for a knitting geek girl.

Lucky Front

Like the back, there's almost no shaping at all on this top until you get to the V-neckline. I think it's just about the most simple garment I've ever knit up. All that is left to do now is to block the front, weave in the ends, do a three needle bindoff on the shoulders, and seam up the sides. I'm a bit skeptical about the lack of armhole shaping, but in the spirit of trying to understand "how things work" I decided I would give it a go.

New tank top by Wednesday? It's a real possibility if tomorrow isn't too crazy at work.

Hello There! I'm a long time lurker of your site and always like to hear about your observations! I myself spend a fair amount of time knitting with watching video games, as my partner and I both play (but I find it more efficient to let him have the controller and direct from the sidelines). YAY for the massive amounts of knitting you can get done!

I agree completely. I finished Sitcom Chic to the boy playing KOTOR on the Xbox. Although, he's gotten annoyed that I don't navigate through RPGs for him anymore, since I'm knitting.

Did you see the recent Penny Arcade comic about Doom3?

My son came to me yesterday and said "Mom, come here you have got to see this". It was Doom 3. He has been a video game nut since he was born. He's 22 now. His hand eye coordination amazes me. I have to say the graphics are awesome! I don't play though.
Your Lucky sweater is so pretty. Beautiful color! What pattern is that? :-)

Ah, I remember many happy, late-night hours playing the original DOOM when I first started grad school. It was a great way to blow off steam. I don't think my computer or I could handle the current version.

My geek boyfriend doesn't play Doom, but he is into EverQuest in a big way. I played for a tiny bit, and I'd knit while mediating to get mana back. And watch him play. So geeky.

Doom 3 is big around here as well... esp with the gamer boyz I work with. Haven't played it myself yet...

I was reminded, however (by the title of your post) of a project idea inspired by a post on Game Girl Advance (www.gamegirladvance.com) - using the old 8-bit graphic characters (Pac Man, Mario, etc) as charts for knitting... space invader scarfs, Mario hats - you name it. That would also be Video Game Knitting...

I knit sitting on the couch next to Fox who is always playing some game on Play Station. It's one of my favorite ways to spend time with him.

Ha! Another one! We're NOT alone! Confession: The Large One and I have been team-playing RPGs and adventure/quest games since the days of Zork and Wizardry I. We usually do an hour or two a night instead of TV. He handles the keyboard, I navigate, map (remember mapping?), puzzle-solve, keep tabs on the location of stuff/health of characters, and generally kibbitz - all while knitting. (The kids play along, too and learned basic math skills by tracking experience points.) A good story goes a long way to making a game a fun shared experience. We find first-person shooters to be less fun to group-play than adventures, and stick to the PC platform. We did like Jedi Knight though, and are looking forward to the Bards Tale remake.

I take it you've found Women Gamers - http://www.womengamers.com/

That looks like some fun knitting right about now, I am attempting to knit Soul from Rowan Calmer and it is not making me any calmer.

But to the question, what are those cool looking gadets/look like stitch holders? I am alawys on teh look out for cool things to add to my knitting accoutrement "bag" :)
