Another Reason to Stay Up Late

It's probably not completely kosher, but I decided that I needed to buy myself a birthday present this year. Even though I picked out the wheel, I like to think of it as John's present to me this year. Interestingly, then, I am the only one who did not get me a fiber related present. Instead, I opted for something both physical and technological in nature.

Dance Dance Revolution Mat

Perhaps you've seen those dancing games in the video arcades? Well, this large, padded multi-colored tic-tac-toe board works with our Xbox so that I can play Dance Dance Revolution in the privacy of my own home. Which is a good thing. I am not the most co-ordinated creature to walk the planet and watching me play this game could be disconcerting to anyone who has good balance and rhythm.

Believe it or not, I bought it as an exercise tool. I've been trying to find something that I could do at home (Chicago not being very hospitible to outdoor activities during the winter) that would make me want to exercise. I read about how they were actually installing these in schools to help kids exercise and it was working to keep the kids exercising longer. I have about the same attention span as most teenagers, so I figured if it worked for them, maybe it would work for me. Hey, the game even has an exercise setting and keeps track of the calories you burn. And, last night, I started playing at 11:30 PM and completely lost track of time until about 1:30 in morning! Clearly even the attention span challenged can be engaged by this game.

Once I get a little better, y'all are invited over for a little Dance Dance Revolution party. Anyone who can dance and knit on a sock wins an extra prize!

And because the Beeze snuck into the picture yesterday, and I want to be an equal opportunity cat owner, I thought I would provide a picture of Syndey and Mercutio doing what they do best.

Something that I should be doing right about now, myself!

It is great exercise! An ex had one and I would play for hours. Now, I can't bring myself to pay a dollar to embarass myself in public.

Oh, maybe I should take my daughters bratz dance mat out of its box and use. She has never used it, because she doesn't like bratz (good girl).
I love tha cat photo, that is not just a cat nap, that is a double nap.

That dance game looks like fun.

Well, I don't live near you, but I can in fact play DDR while knitting a sock. Pictures on demand (I'll have to get someone to take some). I can do 3-foot songs with knitting without a problem, and should be able to do some 4s. 7-8 foot songs would be downright dangerous with needles!

I loved DDR - even bought the high-end ignition pads from Red Octane (boy, did my score go up after that!) - but then I hurt my L knee. I haven't played regularly in 2 yrs because of that injury. (I have another DDR-crazed friend who hurt an ankle.) So be careful!

PS - don't forget, there's no need to return to the center of the pad between moves. :D

That DDR is a great thing for exercise. My kids, who are computer nerds and sit in front of their machines day and night, have one. They are entertained enough by the DDR that they will exercise. I tried it and it does take a little practice. It doesn't just happen right off the bat (like anything). Have fun. :)

Ohhhhh, you are a funny geeky girl. You do love the techni-toys, don't you? Have fun with it! And Happy Belated Birthday!
Sydney and Mercutio look like some kind of strange two-headed cat.

I love DDR. You can get the games for the computer (PC or Mac) and use a USB adaptor to hook up the pad to your laptop. Good for travelling!

My daughter (age 10) has one in her latch key room at school and the kids have to sign up to use it. They are always hopping when I pick her up, I'm all for keeping them a little more active than tv or computers can provide. I was thinking about getting one for home-I teach aerobics and want something different to exercise with-is it expensive? I'm not into tv games or playstation, so I don't know how much $$ it would take to have it.

Have fun!

Remember in Dr Doolittle (the movie from the 1960s with Rex Harrison, not the Eddie Murphy update) there was a creature called the PushmePullyou. That's what those kitties remind me of.

Big fan of DDR. Never tried it while knitting though bet I could do it on beginner.

What a fun gift! I've toyed with the idea of trying that out, but alas we live on the third floor and wouldn't want our downstairs neighbors to think we house elephants or something. Oh, and the arcade is soooo not an option haha.

Those cats are freakishly cute! I'm with Zeila, they do look like the Pushmi-pullu that was stuck together backwards.

That is an amazingly cute cat picture.

Eek! DDR!

Three of my friends actually made a very solid metal-and-wood framed DDR pad from scratch...very impressive. Me? Too uncoordinated, and my bad knees can only take about half a song before they threaten to collapse. It's a wonderful exercise tool, though, and the people who are good at it are amazing to watch. Have fun!

The cats look as if they are attached at the head - siamese cats, so to speak. Very cute!

I've had a DDR game for my PSOne for several years now, and I love the convenience of having it in the apartment--no excuse due to whether or "I don't wanna have to go out to the gym" not to exercise.

Hope you enjoy it!

the kitties look like conjoined twins

I love how the kitties are using each other as a pillow. Talk about resourceful!

You know what's funny is that my name is June too and I was going to say: Remember not to go back to the center! DDR is such a fun game and I'd rather do that than go running. I have a PS2 though, which has more DDR mixes you can pick up (I think XBOx only has one or two?).

First, love the extreme cat cuteness. Second, that game looks very intriguing. But, you must be very, very tired today.

DDR is the BEST! Ever played the online computer version, called Flash Flash Revolution? For those of us who are clumsy on our feet, it's DDR only you play it with the arrow keys on your keyboard. Ha! :D

I'm so, so jealous. I seriously considered getting this, also to encourage exercise (and to discourage vanity) but we don't have any Xbox or PS2 or whatnot. Alas. Have fun, and happy belated bday.
