Sock Energy

Oops! Where did I go yesterday? Actually, I had a post idea and everything. But then I had one glass of homebrew beer and got seriously sleepy. I headed off to bed without even remembering my poor blog.
I did accomplish something today: I finished my first Broadripple sock in Elann Esprit "French Navy" (if you want a pair of socks at a bargain price, this stuff is for you -- $2.75 a ball and one ball makes a standard sized woman's sock... $5.50 and a little time and you've got yourself a pair of socks). I really don't mind knitting with the stuff. I know some out there are not fond of the stretchy quality of the yarn, but I didn't find that it posed a whole lot of problems for me. This is probably a good thing, since I went crazy a few summers back and bought a bunch of the stuff! I'm looking forward to getting the second sock cast on and then thinking about what to do with the rest of my Esprit stash... after all, summer is the time for cotton socks. And the elasticity of these socks guarantees that they won't be saggy socks.
This sock was also the sock that went with me to surgery on Monday morning and that made the trip with me to John's second follow-up appointment (yes, of course, I was trying the thing on for foot length when John's name got called). I started the toe decreases at his appointment and finished it up when we got home. We got more positive news at this appointment. John still is under "house arrest" for the time being (at least until next Tuesday when he has his third follow up appointment), but the doctor told us that the retina has, in fact, re-attached. Now John needs to keep that air bubble working on holding the retina in place while he continues to heal. It made me laugh... after his appointment John asks the doctor er, can I have a beer while I'm recovering? and the doctor smiles and says you can definitely have more than one. John may not be able to roam around yet, but he can drink beer and surf Ebay -- a man has to have his priorities.

Huzzah on the sock, the homebrew and John's continued successful recovery!
Think my Mom had the same surgery a few weeks ago - does John have a flourescent wrist band announcing that he is "flammable"? Too much fun
And the socks look beautiful
Good news about John! And yes, beer makes everything better. That's what Ian says, anyway.
The sock looks great and I'm so glad John is recovering nicely. Great news.
Cheers for the good news and the beer!
The sock looks great. I like the color and the pattern. I'm happy to hear you say nice things about the Elann esprit because I have a bunch of it at home too and I was a little worried.
I don't have any Elann Esprit, but I think it would be a plus to have a little stretch in the sock, no? They look great, by the way. Glad John is kicking back with a brew and surfing ebay. Very relaxing, but sometimes costly!
I didn't used to like it until I was forced to use it to make some gift socks (didn't have any other sock yarn I was willing to give away hehe). I found a way to knit them that I really enjoy and now I can't wait to make some more. I used Fixation actually, but they have so many beautiful colors of Esprit!
Long way of saying, GREAT SOCKS!
The sock looks great -- isn't that pattern fun! Glad to read that John is doing well.

Good for John! Look for orange dragon socks later....
It's funny, I never liked the Broadripple pattern much until I saw how it looked on an actual foot! I'll have to give it a second look now that I see how nicely yours turned out. :-)
Lucky John! Official medical sanction to kick back with the beer of his choice. That doesn't sound half bad! ;-) And just in time for the weekend...
Hurray for John! Beer and the web -- that sounds good to me!
Cool! And a batch of the homebrew is already ready? That was quick! And if it made you sleepy, you obviously did everything right :)
Woohoo for John!!! If homebrew makes the time fly by, go for it. Watch out on that eBay fixation, though -- surfing is one thing; buying another. My DH started buying vacuum tubes and shot the budget!
Drinking beer and surfing ebay sounds like the good life! Great news.
Congradulations to John with having the air bubble stay in place.
My hubby went through that a few years ago, the bubble didn't work and he had to have the scloria band put into place to hold the retina in place!!
Love your socks by the way
Liz
I finally finished my first broadripples in Esprit too. I did them in cream for my Mom (Mother's Day gift) and they really ended up being beautiful. I didn't like the stretchy quality to knit with but the finished product is so worth it (and that stretchy is lovely to wear) that I'll just have another set of socks in my beloved wool on the needles for a break. Besides, I went bonkers at the same time you did and have about 7 "sets" ready for socks.
Hooray for reattached and healthy, healing tissues! That deserves at least a beer, eh?
Could I ask what size needle you used on your Broadripple Espirit socks? I have some of that - but hadn't thought of it for socks!
Yay for John and his quickly reattaching retina! Bless him. He deserves his beer and eBay surfing. May he continue on this recovery.
And you deserve a beer, too, after knitting such fab socks. And in French BLEU, to boot. If you're following the World Cup, why not wear them during the match on Sunday? Hee hee!
Glad to hear that John is recovering, and able to enjoy a glass or two. What do you think about trying some of that Esprit with the Jaywalker pattern? It's a pretty firm knit that could use a little stretch for comfort around the ankle, imho.
I have been away from blogville for several days, and I've just read about John's surgery. I'm SO pleased it went well, and he's recovering brilliantly. What a relief.
Yeah for home brew and eBay. Whatever it takes.
I'm glad it's going so well for John, you two are so busy that this "time out" for him has got to be really hard. Won't be long now, hang tough.
Beer, ebay and cotton socks doesn't sound half bad to me, either.
