A Few More Things About Me -- Another Meme

It seems I've been tagged by Sande for a meme that's been doing the rounds lately. Since this weekend was devoted to holiday cheer (two company Christmas parties on Friday, our own big party on Saturday, brunching with good friends who came in from Madison for the party on Sunday morning and plowing through some Christmas shopping on Sunday afternoon) I find myself largely without any significant knitting or spinning efforts to talk about. Thus, this meme comes at the right time for me -- although I'm not sure whether I can come up with 6 weird things, since I've done this a few times before. And I'm going to cheat on the whole tagging six new people thing...

Here are THE RULES:Each player of this game starts with the ‘6 weird things about you.’ People who get tagged need to write a blog of their own 6 weird things as well as state this rule clearly. In the end, you need to choose 6 people to be tagged and list their names. Don’t forget to leave a comment that says ‘you are tagged’ in their comments and tell them to read your blog.”

  • I'm phone-o-phobic. Not sure what it is, and it didn't develop until my adult years, but I just hate picking up the phone. I don't have problems talking with people in general, but it takes a lot of inertia for me to punch in a phone number and call someone. I will happily send email all day long.
  • I like chocolate, but I don't love chocolate or any other form of sweet, really. If I'm going to get in trouble with snack food, it's going to be potato chips or barbeque Fritos or a bag of Gardetto's snack mix. Or Margaritas.
  • I tend to get bored at the beach.
  • If I could live anywhere in the world, money no object, I would probably still choose to live in Chicago, and I'd probably still choose a house in the neighborhood I live in. I might choose a slightly more elaborate house -- or at least on on two city lots.
  • Somewhere buried in my house I still have a collection of D&D compatible dice. When I roleplay on the computer or in real life (have not done that for many years) I almost always play a half-elf wizard. I've always wanted to be able to cast spells and live longer.
  • Someday, I would like to own a parrot or a boa constrictor. I am fascinated by birds and snakes, but am not sure they are compatible with cats. And my husband has made it pretty clear that they may not be compatible with him.

And now the tagging part.... heh. Well, in addition to all those other facts, I'm lazy (I didn't think that being lazy counted as something weird enough to include in the list). I also know that a lot of folks that I would probably tag, prefer to pick and choose their own memes. So, I'm going to turn this one around a bit and instead invite anyone who reads my blog and would like to play along to leave a comment in my comments telling me you're going to participate. I'd love to hear from lurkers. Y'all are more than welcome to do the tagging part, should you want to. I'll have a special follow up post to this one with all the people who left me a comment with a link to their post.

I look forward to finding out a bit more about the people who check in with me every day.

(More fiber content to come, soon, I promise!)

» Where Did I Go? And Weird Things About A Number of People from The Keyboard Biologist Knits

Sheesh! Computers! I've been having blogging and computer use problems for a couple of days. Fortunately, the computer whisperer that is my husband was able to get Chaos (the name of my intrepid laptop) back into fighting form so that... Read More

I've got that same kind of phone-o-phobia. Weirdly (I guess I should do the meme!), I don't have caller ID on my home phone. Also - I have a friend who has a parrot and several cats. The parrot talks to the cats.

De-lurker alert :o). Six weird things, I can't resist that one.
Actually, the first weird thing would be why I didn't ever leave a comment before, while I was following the spinning saga with bated breath :o).
Oh well, better late than never.

I'm phone-o-phobic, too. Don't get me wrong... I love to talk, and I might call someone in my family or a friend to just talk, and if I do get talking on the phone (either because I called or someone called me) I'll usually go on and on for an awful long time.

But, I'd almost rather get my teeth drilled than make ANY sort of business-y phone call. It almost doesn't matter what type. The more serious the matter, the more frustration and anxiety it causes, but even simple calls I have a hard time making myself do... for instance, I often end up with my hair growing out such that I have no choice but to pull my bangs back with a barrette until I just can't stand the boredom of that look before I can get myself to make a haircut appointment.

I got tagged for this one last week so I'll be doing it, too.

i've been tagged for this one and am currently working on my list. like you though i'd rather eat salt than sweet any day of the week. also, i wouldn't call myself phone phobic, but i rarely use the phone and use email for my job almost exclusively.

Whew, I'm glad to see there are others out there who are phone-o-phobic too. It's not that I mind talking to people once I am on the phone, it's just getting over the anti-callling inertia that drags me down.

Probably the biggest weird thing about me is that things have to be lined up properly or it really bothers me. For example, if pictures are crooked on the wall - drives me crazy.

I share a lot of your "weird things" Phone-o-phobia runs in my family (my dad's side), I still have my dice too, and I used to have a parrot(they are compatible with cats).

Too bad I don't do memes. ;) (Plus I blog in Finnish. :)) I recognize the phone thingy: I mostly use my cell phone for SMS messages, and I communicate with my friends on IRC or by email...

Can I have your share of the chocolate in the world, if I hand you over my chips and such? ;)

Sounds like fun! I'll play. :-)

You know, I'm phone-o-phobic, too! Wow, I didn't know any one else was!

I've already been tagged and I'm working on my six weird things right now. I have phone-o-phobia too. I would much rather send an email than to pick up the phone and call someone.

OK, I'll play. I've posted my list to my blog. I also invited my readers to play. Too bad I don't have regular readers.

gina said:

I'm ok with the phone thing, and I am totally with your husband - snakes are NOT compatible. I'll play along too.

Susan said:

Boa Constrictors are cool but snakes in general make pretty boring pets, especially if you are used to cats. They don't do much and don't have much personality.

I'd like to have some sort of intelligent bird someday but my husband doesn't want anything in a cage.

You want weirdness? You've got it.

I'm confused as to why these internet surveys are being called "memes"? A meme is just an idea. The term was coined by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book "The Selfish Gene" to compare the way memes (or ideas) spread to the way genes spread.

Here's Dawkins's exact definition of meme: "a unit of cultural transmission, or a unit of imitation."

He further explained, "Examples of memes are tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches. Just as genes propagate themselves in the gene pool by leaping from body to body via sperms or eggs, so memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation."

Anyway, just curious. I've seen these surveys called memes on several blogs recently and it just sounds funny to me. Is it just because they are spread so quickly on the internet?

Ok. I give up. I'll play along...tho' I'm really convinced I'm not the least bit weird!

You mean I'm not the only one? I'd far rather email than phone, too. And I also told people to tag themselves, I wasn't going to do so.

I'll de-lurk and play.

Pass the chips. I'm not that thrilled with the chocolate myself. And I'll pass on the beach any day of the week, which makes some people gasp a bit in horror since I live in Hawaii. C'est la vie.
