Fish Tale
The Fiber Fish have started to swim! So far, I've finished the first cuff of the first mitt.

These little mitred squares are surprisingly fun to knit and connect together. Originally, I wasn't so sure that 5 of those little squares would be enough to go around my wrist, but when connected to 5 more squares offset, they do just fine.
I followed Laurie's instructions, but if you wanted to have mittens that were more like gauntlets, it would be very easy to lengthen the tail by adding an extra row or two of squares. And given how much yarn I've used so far, I doubt you'd have to worry about running out of yarn or anything like that.
After a little bit of ribbing, I get to launch off into some entrelac. Something new in knitting for me! I'm hoping it's fun to do and easy to make look nice.

At this point, these mittens remind me of jellyfish. That always makes me giggle.
Ooh! Very pretty!
I like the colors, too. Under the Sea with a bit of coral.
I rushed to buy this pattern after seeing it on your blog the other day. I have a daughter who would be charmed with fish mittens (actually, I have two daughters who would be charmed with fish mittens, but one lives in Florida and wouldn't get much use out of wooly mittens...)
I'm almost as far along as you are, and also looking forward to the entrelac, which I've never tried. I've read about it, and I think I understand the principle. I've heard tell that entrelac is a good reason to learn to knit backwards, in order to skip the constant flipping. We'll see.
Thanks for picking these mitts for a project - I never would have found them otherwise!
OOH. They look like fun to knit. It will be interesting to see if they are more fun to knit or wear -- I imagine it will be equal!
Entrelac is definitely fun and easy -- once you've done the first square or two, you will totally get in the groove of it. It's worth investing a few minutes beforehand on a swatch to get into the rhythm of working backwards, though.
I would concur with the statements that entrelac is an excellent reason to learn to knit backwards. It might not be as important for something as small as mittens, but it definitely made my life easier.
Oh I like the way they're turning out! Such pretty colours!
these look so much fun! You give me such inspiration. I have bookmarked this pattern, and also, next time I sell stuff on eBay i mean to buy your kitty sock pattern as well. such fun, the stuff you write and the stuff you knit.
and a happy birthday, in case I forget to stop by tomorrow. yay snow!
