Twenty Weeks

So, some of you might be wondering why there has been such a dearth of sweater-knitting activity on this blog of late, at a time of year when sweater knitting is usually one of my favorite things to do. Well, the answer is quite simple. I've been undergoing some rapid shape changes due to the presence of a very welcome visitor.

Baby Z In Profile

I wasn't quite sure when I was going to post about our great expectations. You see, it's been something of a long road for us to get here, and I spent a lot of time worried about whether we would get here (that's a story for a future post, perhaps). So I didn't want to post until we felt very sure that all was going well. When you're past that 35 year mark, the range of testing options to help determine that "going well" thing becomes quite large. And, scientist that I am, I wanted as many pieces of evidence as possible when it came to knowing about our baby's health (another scientist friend and I were joking via email about wanting "uterus cam" so that we could see what was going on, monitor the heartbeat, etc). Last Friday we had our 20 week ultrasound and found out that from an anatomical perspective, we have a very healthy little girl bumping and bouncing around -- something I've been feeling for the past couple of weeks now. With this information, along with the other good test results, it seemed like a good time to share our news.

Since the ultrasound, I've felt a very profound peacefulness. I know problems can still happen, but I feel like we're through the toughest part of the waiting process. Now it's just a matter of her growing bigger and me getting rounder. We're feeling very happy and excited about her and can't wait until August when we'll get to meet her in person.

And that will be just the perfect time to think about planning for a new fall sweater. In the meantime, I suspect it might continue to be quilts and socks... since it doesn't seem like an August baby in Chicago needs a lot of sweaters.

Oh, and an August baby in Chicago might not need a sweater in August, but she definitely will later in the fall! You will have lots more free time before she arrives than after. Just sayin'..... ;-)

And seriously, congratulations! I had a hard time getting there as well, so I feel your joy.

Congratulations! Babies are so cool. I fell head over heels when we had our first. The way I describe it is that before he was born my world was black and white (tho' I didn't know it) and when he came all the colors came out. It was amazing.

And a little girl! You've got some fun knitting ahead of you!

CONGRATULATIONS! Babies are such a joyful thing. :)

Congratulations! No, a baby might not need sweaters in August, but she will in September and all the way through until June, and you'll have more time to knit those now than you will after she is born!

Baby sweaters are an absolute thrill to knit because as you are working on them you can imagine the creature who is going to wear them. So tiny!

Best of luck with things.

Congratulations! (Or, as we say in my family, Mazel Tov!) Remember that August doesn't last forever, especially in Chicago, and in January you may want to put that precious baby in two sweaters at a time!

My heartfelt congratulations to you & John! This is truly wonderful news. I'm so happy that things are going well, and I hope they continue. I had my 1st son when I was 36, and my 2nd when I was 39. Having my children is the best thing I've ever done, even if they were "elderly pregnancies"! Enjoy your peacefulness now that you're mostly past the realm of scariness; have you started planning her quilt yet?

Congratulations, August is Chicago is a good time to have a baby.... speaking from experience. My son was born on August 9th at Copley Hospital in Aurora. I have 2 pieces of advice for you. The first is fairly well known. Continue to get some exercise, labor is MUCH easier when you are physically fit. The second, I didn't learn until my second trip to the hospital with false labor. Drink, Drink LOTS of water, dehydration can throw you into false labor. Best wishes for you, John and your daughter.

suzanne said:

OH! and you are over the hardest part now. Let the worrying and barfing go away......and roll on into those maternity clothes!

From someone who knows what it's like to wonder if she'll ever 'get there,' Congratulations! What a wonderful gift you've been given :)

I wish you all the best. I still remember that sense of profound inner peace and despite the late nights, I would still relive that first year of their lives. Enjoy! Little girls grow up to be the best girl-friends!

It was not difficult to read between the lines that this was the journey (and one of the more difficult ones) that you have been on. It makes it all worthwhile when you hold that perfect little person in your arms for the first time. I prayed for that day to come for you and now it appears that day WILL come. Congratulations!

Keep in mind that many of the knitting patterns for newborns are actually 3-6 months. Perfect for that Chicago August baby.

Congratulations!!! If you're anything like me, be prepared to crank up the AC this summer, and knit socks, bibs, and washcloths. Urp cloths are good too. You won't want that excess fabric of any kind all over you. That, combined with my son sucking out my brain during part of the pregnancy (and still continues, sometimes) kept me from lace, etc. The short person just turned 6 months old, and he'll be turning 1 shortly after you have a wonderful addition to your family that will make you sleep deprived. But you'll love every minute of it (after you get a nap)!

Congrats to the both of you and sweet baby girl too.
That sweet baby girl will just have to come home from the hospital in something and you may as well knit her up a little lightweight dress or smock and a matching hat & booties.

When I had my little aug.baby girl and I wasn't going to put her in a hand knit because of the heat everyone reminded me, the car is air conditioned, the house is air conditioned and it's just for the journey from hospital to home
and right they were. We love to look at those photos and think of that joyous day & that outfit is pressed and clean & put away in tissue for one day when she might just have her own little baby girl to wear while making the journey home.
Lots of Luck, Enjoy Every Minute Of This Joyous Event.
