The Sixth Star and a Bump Shot

The 6th LeMoyne Star

This star marks the half way point through the blocks that I am putting together. It has a real "jungle flower" feeling to me. And I like the sort of flower within a flower pattern you get (if you think of the star design as something of a flower motif). I do wish that bottom left piece had fit in just a little bit better so it looked like there was just one little flower in the center. However, it is as several people have said: very slight variations in the diamonds* can have an impact on how the center looks.

It has been suggested in my comments that perhaps I should show off a "bump shot" so that you can all see how Ms. Z and I are progressing. Since I am now closing in on 29 weeks and I suspect that I will soon be ending the "cute" part of my gestational period (signified by the fact that several of the cute little tops that I bought are getting a little more belly baring than I like, I thought it might be a good time to take a picture. Hotel bathroom mirrors aren't entirely ideal, but they do work okay. That said, I am not feeling quite bold enough to make it a feature picture on my blog for a day. However if you would like to see how the Z and I are doing just click here. I'm getting to be a very round biologist! And my little passenger almost never sits still for very long. I think Z is preparing for a career as a professional soccer player!

* I know that a few people have asked how the pieces for the stars are made. The idea behind stack and whack is that you find the repeat in your fabric and then you stack as many pieces of fabric on top of each other (matching the repeat) as you need to to create the geometric shape that you want to feature. Then after you "stack", you get out your rotary cutter and "whack" -- i.e. create pieces of the size and shape that you need to make to get the central block feature.

Very cute!

Also: I'm not as far along (26+6 today) and I'm definitely bigger. And not just in the belly area, I have the behind to balance the bally with :-/

However: all my tops are super stretchy and I'm hoping they will last until the end of August. If not I'll just live in my bathing suit instead...

Looking good! Why is it that the people making maternity clothes think we want to show off the tops of the pants, or that just because we may have cleavage for the first time that we want it hanging out too? Crazy, I'm glad not to be covered in a mumu, but surely there's a middle ground :)

OMG - you look great! Yeah, yeah, yeah for you and Z!!!!!

You and Miss Z look great and so does your sixth star. If I look really close I can see what you mean about the center join on the lower left. You could maybe futz with it a bit to bring the point in enough to have the flower but that might not leave you with enough seam outside. Ripping is less traumatic in sewing than in knitting. Well, so long as you haven't clipped your curves or something yet anyway.

It still looks beautiful. No one would think you'd only been quilting a couple of months from the quality of your work.

Thanks for the wonderful tummy picture!! You do look fabulous and glowing just as I suspected you would. You are carrying really high. I felt like mine were all down around my knees all the time so I "think" you might be lucky in that. I say I think because I suspect you will soon (if you don't already) find that breathing becomes a real challenge with a baby taking up 9/10 of your diaphragm. I still think it's better than having someone stomping (or sitting) on your bladder all the time, which is what I got.

What cute booties! You can never have too many of those.

Awww....look at Ms Z sitting there all high and up front. Girl I gotta tell ya, you aren't making this middle aged, empty nester's yearning for just one more baby before time runs out any easier!!! LOL I don't have any idea when my girls will start having babies, (already in their 20's, one pushing 30 and no men in sight) thanx for letting me celebrate yours.

You should probably rip out and resew that last joining seam for the center of this block. You had some slippage while the center section was under your presser foot. To avoid this, after you have unsewed that seam, take 1 pin and put it horizontally through the point in the center /\ on both pieced sections. While that pin is still sticking out perpendicular, take another pin through all the layers next to the first pin on both the right and left sides. You want to slide those secondary pins into the fabric vertically so that the fabric doesn't bunch up underneath them. When these outer pins are in place, and that central starter pin still remains perpendicular to the fabric, then you can remove that latter pin. Now you take your piece to the machine and sew it together, being VERY careful to sew across those pieced points and not let the needle waver in that very thick seam spot.

This is very much like the process you used to align all the original 8 layers of fabric to cut out your diamond shapes.
