Square Ten and a Post Script

I am coming into the home stretch with my stack n' whack stars. This is the 10th out of 12 blocks. It's my hope to get them all finished up this week so that I can get the quilt assembled before the Z Baby arrives. The quilt is destined for her nursery, and, in the interests of time, if I can get the top finished, I'm going to have it machine quilted by someone else. Just a few too many other things on my plate between now and her arrival. I'm happy with this completed block and think it embodies the "groovy" qualities of the fabric I started with.
As a follow up to yesterday's post, I just wanted to say that my trip to the OB's office Monday morning had a much better outcome for me than Thursday's trip. The fasting blood sugar levels were absolutely fine, the doctor expressed no concern over the fact that at this point the Z baby seems to prefer a head-up position and I don't have any signs of pre-term labor that would suggest that my bit of dilation is anything to be concerned about. In fact, exercise is fine as long as I don't over do it and it doesn't irritate my sciatica too much. I'm still not supposed to get too far from home, but that's a do-able restriction, since I wasn't planning on any real travel after June anyways.
Probably the biggest surprise for me with this visit was having the OB I saw today (amazing for the fact that her own baby is due in two weeks and she barely looks like she's started her second trimester) tell me that Dr. Serious had reservations about my condition due, in part, to what she felt was worsened sciatica (I assume because it suggests increased downward pressure on the nerves that might indicate the baby getting into position or my uterus getting active). She never mentioned this to me -- if she had, I would have happily told her that the sciatica was no different than it had been for the past couple of months that I've been dealing with it. I guess this falls into the "hazards of a large practice" place where my previous mentions of it to other doctors didn't get entered into my (what is becoming a very large) file, thus it appeared to be a warning signal and really wasn't It would have been nice to have this explained to me by Dr. Serious. Certainly it would have made for a better experience. Probably for both of us.

Glad things are on a more even keel OB-wise. For what it's worth, I'd advise to try not to ever let anyone make you feel like a bad mother when you know that you're not. I'd also advise trying swimming if you have access to a pool. It worked wonders at relieving my pregnancy-induced sciatica 16 years ago. I used to get great amusement & a wonderful calm feeling while I did laps; I was suspended in water (relieving baby pressure)while my own baby R was suspended within me.
I'm relieved to hear that all is well.
I'm sorry you had such a stressful experience with Dr. Serious. I had awful sciatica throughout both of my pregnancies so I know what you're going through. Hang in there! Also, there are some exercises you can do to encourage Z to get into a head down position (although it's still early to be worrying about it).
I'm with you! My sciatica kicked in again this week. I hadn't had much problem since getting pregnant, but this weekend every step was a reminder. We'll see what my midwife has to say about that on Thursday.
So glad to read that all is well.
augh, so glad to hear that this recent appointment went so well--and yes, why didnt' dr. serious mention that tidbit of info to you?!
well, all that is important now is that you are doing fine and so is baby Z! have a great week and nice square! :o)
Pretty quilt block! I'm glad the OB thing is sorting itself out. If you have to deal with Dr. Serious again you should probably be proactive and flat out ask why she's concerned. Make her be specific and then you'll have the info so you can correct any misapprehensions and hopefully you won't have to do that roller coaster of emotional upset.
So glad to hear that things are better, and that Dr. Serious' reservations were due to a miscommunication rather than any actual potential problems.
I think it's hard when you see lots of different OBs over the course of your pregnancy. My clinic was different - you generally saw your OB unless they were unavailable or something. But I did wind up seeing one of my OB's partners for my last visit before my scheduled induction, and we had a similar sort of situation - where what would not have alarmed my regular OB did concern this other OB, and there was a bit of a domino effect from there. Nothing major or anything, but just... I look back and wish there had been some way to clear up the communication there, y'know?
Anyway. Glad to know you and Baby Z are doing just fine!
Oh, and I forgot to say - I think Square #10 is my favorite of the stack-n-whack squares yet! I love it!
Glad it turned out good after all. Your dad is the sweetest. And I love this square the best too!
Glad to know everything's good! Dr. Serious. LOL. My OB barely spoke. He knew if I had an issue I'd ask. I never mentioned anything that wasn't important. Sciatica sucks. I had it with my first pregnancy, and then after my second found out I actually had arthritis in my SI joints, but it might not have been sciatica the first time. Especially since the chiropractic treatments that everyone told me would be great for it, made it worse. But I never even discussed that with my doc cause it doesn't have much bearing on the baby.
I'm loving these quilt squares! So much colour, but it works great together. I get so lost in a fabric store. I can put yarn colours together, but not fabric. Can't wait to see the finished result! (The quilt AND the baby, LOL)
I looked back through your archive at all your squares, I like this one the best too! I can't wait to check back and see them all together. I would love to quilt, but I'm intimidated by the whole thing! That's good that everything is ok with the baby. Hopefully Dr. Serious isn't the one who's there when you deliver!
What the heck happened to just one doctor from start to finish? Is this the norm in the U.S? Times have sure changed from when I had my kid (41 years ago), and it's too bad that we just sit back and take it. I am glad all is well and absolutely love your square. I need to start quilting again some day soon, just too many hobbies and things to do...ciao
I'm glad everything is well with you, the baby, and the docs. I'm sorry for your sciatic pain. I know it too well. Your square is wonderful.
Your quilt will be beautiful, your daughter will be beautiful and your dad is already beautiful. Who cares about Doctor Negative Nelly. She's got $100K in student debt to pay off.
Glad things are going well! They still don't know how to teach bedside manner in med school. Some people should just choose pathology.
At least they aren't freaking you out about the baby's position. If the baby stays head up, you might want to google around and look for various exercise sort of things you can do to induce turning before you go into labor. It's apparently not a pack of fun once labor starts, according to a friend of mine, who nonetheless observed that it beat the heck out of a c-section. And apparently there are a lot of doctors who won't even try to get a breech baby to turn, they just head for the knives.
