My Gift to My Daughter

| | Comments (54)

On Friday I picked up a special gift for my daughter -- the Groovy Stack n' Whack quilt was complete. It's quilted and has a soft plush purple backing out of a fabric called Minky. It's a bit heavy, so it will most likely be a winter quilt for a summer baby. Minky is machine washable, so it makes a nice backing for a baby quilt -- and it actually comes in some "adult" colors, too. I'm thinking it would be a nice backing for a quilt for John and I as well.

I've talked about this quilt a lot in the past and I don't have many more details to add... so most of this post will just be images.

Close Up of Binding and Quilt Stitch Pattern

My Zosia Butterfly has butterflies quilted into her quilt. Butterflies are something of a theme in her room, so when I picked the quilting design, I looked for one with a butterfly motif. The quilt has a very simple binding made up of one of the background fabrics. This seemed like the best way to go since it didn't introduce any new fabric and it seemed like simple would be best for a baby quilt.

Clearly it will take her a while to grow into her quilt!

Smiles All Around

Looks like the recipient likes it. What could be better than a baby smile? (And none of you are allowed to tell me that they don't smile this early or that it's just gas... she makes this happy face at us all the time... don't burst a new mom's bubble!).

Love you, baby girl. I'm looking forward to adding a few more quilts to your collection in the future.

What a beautiful heirloom and gift for your daughter (who is even more lovely!) I've been following the progress of this quilt and think it's just brilliant.

Of course she is smiling! - such a beautiful baby... and the quilt is lovely too!

She's such a cutie! And the quilt is beautiful, Theresa. What a lovely gift for your new daughter. How nice that it's finished and waiting for cuddling at the first cool weather!
(And it looks wonderful on your father's gorgeous rocking chair!)

Looks like a smile to me. Our chick smiled early on too. I was told the usual, but now I look at the photos and see that he was, most definately, smiling.
It's been a privilge to read your birth story. Thank you for sharing it with us. I also wanted to say that the pic of your hand with Zophia's sweet little hand is intensely beautiful. I hope you have an enlarged print of that on your wall !
A gorgeous quilty too.

You'll be amazed at how quickly she grows into that quilt. She'll be dragging it around the house in no time!

That is one happy baby. And one gorgeous quilt, but you knew that already.

Oh how beautiful she is. She deserves that quilt. It's exactly beautiful enough to be her backdrop. Yay.

She is beautiful and so is the finished quilt! Congrats Mama!

Of course they are real smiles! Even Dr. Sears says so...he calls them something like early grins of contentment. Enjoy!

It's a smile! My guys all smiled at that age when I came into view, they can't possibly have gas on cue.

The quilt is GORGEOUS! And so, of course, is Zosia! Looks at those LONG fingers!

Beautiful quilt! The baby is so sweet!

Teresa, above sentiments echoed. Also,I love the Minky like you and decided to make a queensize for us. LOVE,LOVE,LOVE this blankie. My hubbie thinks it's a tad "heavy" as I pieced the Minkie like a quilt then added a cotton backing (no batting), but I didn't "quilt" it, I tied it at the intersections. My squares were 6". I wasn't sure how the Minky would quilt as it shifts so much during the sewing process. Did the quilter say if it was a problem keeping it stable?
I start my day w/your blog and really enjoy your observations. Enjoy your butterfly, she'll be out of the cocoon before you know it. My precious baby grew up in what seemed like 10 yrs. and now is gifting me w/2 adorable gbabies.

Oh -- they are lovely together! My little ones smiled at this age too -- at a weird black and white rattle, the both of them. So, I'm with you. She loves her quilt.

So precious. Make sure you get some photos like this on a regular basis. There is a golden time, between 8-12 months when babies have chubbed up, that photographers love to photograph. I kept waiting for #3 to chub up, never happened, never got the naked babies photos :(
Minkee is a wonderful fabric, very popular for baby blankets; I hadn't thought of it as a backing, although I have seen it in pouch slings. Reminds me of Patons Cha Cha yarn!
She definately is smiling!

That's a real smile! My Dr. Sear's baby book says smiles are caused by an "inner feeling of rightness" and what could be more wonderful than your little butterfly spreading out on a blanket lovingly made by her mom! The quilt is beautiful, and so is your baby girl.

Not better than, but tied with a baby smile, is that baby smell that newborns have - if someone could only bottle that.....

Amanda said:

Wow! That's so beautiful. (Your daughter is so beautiful also!!)

Lindsey said:

The quilt is wonderful - and your daughter has got to be one of the cutest babies I've EVER seen!

Janet said:

So beautiful - the baby, the quilt, the smile. Perhaps you should capture a photo of her and this quilt every year on her birthday. Enjoy each and every day - it really does fly.

Theresa: Zosia is just precious! Yes they do smile at an early age - and it keeps getting better and better. The quilt is a masterpiece.

Beautifully done-baby and quilt! I actually saw Zofia and Jon out on Saturday, I assume you weren't far away, but I didn't see you. I recognized Zofia and her purple blanket from last week's post and looked up to see Jon standing with the stroller! It was a beautiful day for getting out in our neighborhood, and what a beautiful little girl to see out enjoying it!

Julie said:

I really like the quilting they did! I think it would be nerve wracking to send off a quilt to be quilted by someone else, but whoever you used did a great job.

And I'm glad to see more pictures of the baby :)

Marlena said:

Clearly a smile! :)

That quilt is gorgeous, and destined to be an heirloom.

I believe in baby smiles! I think they are very aware, very early. I think she and the quilt look delightful.

Zosia is so cute! What a lovely smile!
And the quilt is beautiful too. They go together very well, Zosia and the quilt.

Lorraine said:

Lovely baby, lovely quilt. Well done.

Laura said:

Gorgeous quilt--I loved it when you started it, and love it even more now! And Zosia is just delightful, of course!! She can love that quilt for many years to come.

Meg said:

She's beautiful and most definitely smiling. The quilt has so much visual impact, so much for her to look at, I think that's a wonderful gift. My baby is now one year old and always busy doing some important one-year-old things, running fast from sun up until she crashes at night...(yes she does nap, too)...It's a joy to see her learning and exploring, but I fiercely miss the snuggles and cuddles of a newborn. Enjoy every moment of snuggle time with your butterfly. Thanks for sharing your stories.

Of course she's smiling -- she's a happy, contented baby! And the quilt is just beautiful. The butterflies are a perfect finish for it.

What a lovely, lovely quilt for an absolutely darling little girl!! Pregnancy projects are the absolutely the best, aren't they?? There's just something about making something with your hands, while your body is working on making such an incredible little miracle-just wonderful!! And that lil smile is definitely not "gas"! I've had 3 babies so far, and I don't believe for a minute that "gas" theory!! My youngest (4.5 mos old already!!!) has the sweetest smile and has had it right from birth!!
Thanks for sharing these pictures!

The quilt is lovely and I love the idea of the minky backing! How very cozy and clever. She is a lovely baby!

What a beautiful quilt for an even more beautiful baby! Just precious!

The quilt looks beautiful. So does your daughter. That's a lovely smile no matter how it came about.

Silvia said:

Aw, what a great picture of Zosia on her beautiful quilt! Nice work on both creations.

what a beautiful gift of love for a beautiful baby!

Suz said:

Oh sure. I see how you are! You went and had to have the baby during the 18 days that i was without a computer and while we were just around the bend of the Lake camping at the Indiana Dunes. Sigh.

Many congratulations, she's a beauty. I'm off to catch up on all the hoopla now.

whitney said:

I absolutely love that quilt! I've been quietly watching you make it and it's so wonderful to see it come together. It's really beautiful (and little Zosia looks quite happy with it, too!). You really have inspired me to give quilting a try...once we unpack from our move, I'm having a friend show me the ins and outs of my sewing machine, and then, who knows.

Wanda said:

What a sweetie! Baby Z is absolutely adorable and the quilt is just beautiful.

Kristel said:

Awwwww... Such a sweet baby! (Oh, the quilt is pretty too. ;))

I'm getting tears in my eyes reading you these days, my baby just started crawling and teething and already has 5 solid meals a day. *sigh*

Opal said:

The finished quilt is just gorgeous and so is your darling baby girl.

Andrea said:

It's not gas - they're happy internal smiles when they feel good. Like when they're falling asleep, being held, feel warm and cozy. Perhaps they're not quite the social smiles of 6 weeks from now, but they're real all the same.

Parenting with your conscience and you can't go wrong.

Sylvia said:

coming out of lurkdom to wish you a big congratulations! Isn't having your baby girl all you dreamt it would be and more?

Kristen said:

Just delurking to say congratulations to you and many wishes for a family life filled with peace, love and joy. I've been popping in and out following your "progress" and am thrilled to learn that everything has turned out wonderfully.

Theresa said:

The quilt is gorgeous but not half as gorgeous as your daughter. I haven't read blogs for ages and was so delighted to see your little girl...who will be too big for that quilt before you know it! :o)

Kate said:

Ditto to the prior comments: the quilt is a fantastic heirloom, but I like the baby even more. Sigh. Babies are dangerous things - they induce Mommy Dementia and make me think I should do this one more time. We'll see.

Congratulations, congratulations, and congratulations again on your little girl! She's beautiful.

Congratulations to your wonderful daughter! I just came home from vacation and read that she already made it to earth!
I wish you 3 all the best!!
