Roll Over, Baby
It's milestone time for Ms. Z again, who hits 4 months on Saturday. On Monday afternoon, after her nap, John found her on her back. Which wouldn't be unusual, except for the fact that he put her down for her nap on her tummy -- her favorite sleeping position (yes, we know about the SIDS/tummy sleeping connection... no one needs to remind me about the "back to sleep stuff" -- she's been sleeping this way since she was 8 weeks old and it's just what makes her happy). For most of the rest of this week, of course, we've been putting her on her tummy every now and again to see if she will do it for us. I've seen her do it once (it's a lot of work for her!), John has only seen evidence of the behavior after the fact. Sneaky kid!
She's also started reaching out and grabbing things that interest her and drooling up a storm. And suddenly, those elusive afternoon naps are back again. And she's started "talking" -- all sorts of noises at all volume levels. It's a real hoot to watch her tell her dad about her day after he comes home from work. You would think she was having a real conversation with him.

Preparing for a Roll
It's been a very good baby week. We're all sleeping well and she's been a real peach to hang out with. She's even getting better at dealing with car trips. It's hard for me to complain about that.
With the return of the afternoon nap, I'm not only getting some work work done, but I've also been able to sneak some knitting in here and there when I'm not working on getting my blog back in shape (a major time sink if ever there was one!) I'm getting close to the finish line on my Diamond Fantasy Scarf (but there's only so many times I can show you the same crumpled looking piece of lace) and all Z's nursing time is definitely helping me make some progress on John's Stained Glass Scarf (although I am still not even close to the halfway point yet). Since my knitting time is still pretty limited, I'm trying to rein in my startitis and am forcing myself to finish things before I start new stuff -- although I do have a few new things that I am just dying to get started on.

Well done baby Z. for rolling over. Tara has also done it a few times but not since about a week. I think the conditions for rolling over have to be just right. Baby well rested and she has to be barefoot or the socks have to be just perfect.
We too had to invest in a whole load of drolling bibs. I could not keep up with the laundry.
Have a great weekend.
Aren't those milestones great? Here's hoping the afternoon naps continue!
I wouldn't worry too much about the "back to Sleep" thing. When I had my daughter (24 years ago) they told us to never, never, ever put your baby on their back to sleep and now it's just the opposite.
It's amazing how they go from this little animated burrito to a critter that can crawl, cruise the furniture, and pull all your CD's onto the floor, just like that!
I'm delighted to see the return of startitis.
I agree with Amy. My girls are in their 30's &, back in the 70's, we were told to have them sleep on their tummies! My granddaughter (who just turned 1 Monday) is not a great sleeper & could not sleep on her back. So she has slept on her stomach from the beginning. Z is just so cute - it's amazing how much they change in such a short time. I was just commenting to SO the other day how much M has changed - overnight it feels like. She now walks all over the place & climbs like a monkey (just like her Mom at that age) & she's starting to use words [I'm working on getting her to say Grandma but that'll take awhile 8-)].
Well done, Miss Z! and such a cute picture. Miss S at our house (17 months) hit a milestone too this week: climbing out of the crib. Quietly, in the morning while her parents are still sleeping. And then going to have a wander around the house, to see if she can find any yarn to play with. Sneaky kid!
My high-intensity daughter, who reminds me a lot of Miss Z, was so much happier and slept so much better when she started being able to engage her environment physically. Before that, I think she depended on us to engage her; and if we fell down on the job, there was hell to pay. But when she could reach, grab, babble, laugh, roll and eventually creep, she (and we!) were much happier overall. (I love four months old. That's the Gerber Baby age. Smiley, no stranger anxiety, interacting. They're so fun.)
I love baby sounds. I remember hearing a young child in the mall singing to her heart's content and her father shhh-ing her because she was loud. I made sure to tell him to let her be. Babies only have so many ways to get our attention and she was just letting the world know she was there. Celebrate Z's voice and she'll talk to you for the rest of your life.
I've been out of the blogging world for a long time (used to be Beatknits) but I'm back and so delighted to see your new baby! She is absolutely beautiful.
Make sure to enjoy those baby sounds! Not sounding like a typical baby was the big clue with baby #3, and she starts speech 'therapy' tomorrow (just turned two on Sat.). I suspect you'll be feeling a new tooth really soon!
