So far, this is what I have to bring home to Ms. Z -- a plush E. coli bacteria toy (E. coli is a bacteria that likes to live in the human gut; it's also a work horse bug for molecular biology studies).
Thanks to everyone who left me such great suggestions. I brought a journal along to make entries to Z about my trip and I am definitely going to try to find "Make Way for Ducklings" since I love the idea of bringing back books from interesting places.
My first night away from Z was a mixed bag. I did okay until I had to go to sleep and then, for the life of me, I couldn't get to sleep. So, finally, I just got up and worked on a sock I'm knitting since lying in bed feeling frustrated with not sleeping didn't seem to be all that great an option. I still don't know if it was strange missing the baby vibes, circadian rhythm issues or I just wasn't coping well with my new location. Every now and again the same thing happens while I'm at home -- though I haven't had an episode like that one since well before Z was born. I'm hoping tonight I don't get a repeat performance. A good night of sleep would do me a world of good right now.

That E. coli plushie is WONDERFUL. I've been searching for an Ebola virus for a while - any suggestions? Hope the time away from Miss Z is going ok. I haven't spent a night away from my critter yet, but it's coming up soon. Thanks for leading the way with grace.
I like the E. coli plushie. But then, even though invisible critters aren't my forte, I do like my Influenza A. mousepad, acquired years ago at the Museum of Natural History exhibit on viruses.
I'm pretty sure you're the only person I know who brings home E. coli intentionally! I brought home Giardia once. No one liked it, least of all me.
Giantmicrobes.com has Ebola.

I think the E. coli plushie for your daughter is awesome.
Oooh, very cool. Giant Microbes has gotten so many nice microorganisms now. When I ordered my rhinitis and Helicobacter pylori (stomach ulcer culprit), they only had about 10 different microbes. I use mine to break the ice in my microbiology college course I teach. The students think I am totally weird, but how cool are giant microbes?
Very nice toy for your daughter.
Love the E. coli - we have one on top of our centrifuge in the lab, and I have a Hepatitis C virion on my desk! Can't go wrong with the giant microbes...
My sis is a microbial biologist (also in Chicago) - where did you get that toy????? She would LOVE something like that (she also loved some knitted bacteria I made her).
I once had a stuffed Giardia. He was purple, and had those big ol' eyes! Seems like I had something else, too. Maybe a Helicobacter? Those sales reps from Meridian (I think) gave them to us...
He's a cute little E. coli! Not 0157 I suppose :-)
I love giantmicrobes.com I have acquisitioned many of them for christmas stocking stuffers.. Ebola is my favorite followed by flesh-eating strep (he has a little fork and knife!) I gave a few to the daughter of a doctor-friend as well. Geeks raise geeks you know :) Enjoy Boston! Make way for Ducklings is a perennial favorite and the Mother's Day duckling parade (dress your kids up and take them to the public garden) is a sight to behold.
Hi! I've heard that snowglobes go over well with the girls. Of course, I live in a house of men so I didn't get that opportunity. I LOVE the e.Coli!!!
Hope you're well...just remember that being away makes you appreciate being home so much more :)

I love the E. coli. I have that one (and the flesh eating bacteria) usually with me at work. It helps make the day just a little more fun.
Hack again?!
