YAY!!!!!! I had a tear or 2 in my eyes last night. I am old enough to remember the bad old days of segregation. Emmit Till was just a couple of years older than me & I remember how frightened & confused I felt - how could it possibly be that a horrific death was the "punishment" for a black teenager whistling at a white woman? We truly have come a long way. I will, however, miss having Barack Obama as my senator. He really was responsive to his constituents (as is Dick Durbin - I think we had the 2 best Senators in the country in Illinois).
I think that is the only bittersweet part about this -- I was so excited when we elected Barack to be one of our senators. I hope he will continue to demonstrate the qualities that got us Illinoians so excited about him to begin with.
I think many Americans have felt disenfranchised much of the last eight years to the point America no longer felt like a democracy. Barack Obama inspires hope and possibility for a democracy that includes everyone, not just those who voted for him.
It was thrilling to watch the election results pour in from across the country last night and to listen to both candidates speak in ways that could make it clear what we are facing in the futuer and that this was a great first step.
After speaking with friends and reading other blogs, it's apparent that I am not the only one who woke up to this morning feeling like we're finally going to be back on track in America. The hope and enthusiasm I feel appears to be universal. God Bless Barack Obama and Joe Biden. May you serve us well.
I'll wait to see if this is the "change" that my family needs. My husband and my brother each own their own business. Right now, we are hoping that the expected higher taxes on small business owners will not be what it will take to force them to close their businesses. The money for the promised handouts has to come from somewhere and the references to "spreading the wealth" is putting us on edge right now. We'll see what happens.
Congratulations, Thérésa and for you, and all of you !
Congratulations !!!!!! A great people in a great country

Indeed, its a fine day.
Must be so exciting to be in Chicago last night! I took my daughter to the polls too even though she didn't understand what was going on.
It sure was! My biggest regret was not going downtown to watch it all happen... but sometimes being a mom has to come before the big party.

Amazing.
