Skew Socks Start

One Zauberball, one long circular needle and a toe up sock pattern with interesting construction (don't even ask me to knit socks from the top down... I just won't do it any more).

I'm using the Skew pattern from the most recent Knitty.  The yarn was selected because I wanted some wide swaths of color on an angle.  Now that I've gotten started, I think some of my Vesper yarn might have been an even better choice -- but since I didn't know what to expect from the fit of this pattern, I wasn't willing to invest any of my lovely Vesper in the first experiment.

It's been a long time since I've knit socks using the Magic Loop method on one needle.  I think I might have to consider it again -- but not until I find a needle with a softer cable.  This AddiTurbo is from the "inflexible cable" era  and is making me just a little crazy.  I had forgotten how nice Magic Looping was for being able to try on a sock as you go.  Just shift those stitches onto the cable and it's much easier than on double points.

I'm definitely following this pair with extra interest. Peer-pressure has me in a kal for this next month ;)

Lovely colors! You might see the design more in a yarn with smaller color sections, but I am interested in seeing how yours end up looking.

I use Addi lace needles for my socks these days. Nice flexible cord and lovely pointy tips.
I have a collection of Zauberball I need to knit up ! That's looking lovely already.

wow! I keep picking up and putting down the Zauberball, unwilling to commit, since I have never seen a knitted swatch/sock with it. I think I will have to take the plunge.

I don't knit magic loop (DPNs all the way for me). However, my friends who do SWEAR by the knitpicks circs for this. The cable is very flexible and works well. I've also been told that hiya-hiyas work well, too.

Good luck!

I have a couple of huge needles I bought for magic loop, but I usually put them aside in favor of dpns. I think it is because I find it hard to remember which side I'm currently working on when doing magic loop. It takes a few inches before it is clear to me!

I love those colors. They are like candy!

I recently started using the magic loop and really like it. I also find that Knit Picks circs have the most flexible cords I've come across. On the other hand, I've wrecked at least 2 cables by pulling too hard on the cord and dislodging it from the needle/connector. Knit Picks will replace broken cords no questions asked, which is nice. But when I'm in the middle of knitting something, I don't want to have to stop and request new equipment so I can continue!

I'll recommend Hiya Hiya needles. I like them. They have flexible cables and are inexpensive.

Just recently I stumbled upon magic loop with one needle. It's heaven to me and i wouldn't do anything else now. I use Hiya Hiya needles. The cables are very flexible and do not interfer with my knitting. Even compared to the one Addi I have it's still better in my eyes. Maybe you should try them sometime they are cheaper than Addis

That Zauerball yarn looks great! I have a ball of that somewhere ...

I plan to make those Skew socks with some Koigu that I was gifted one year - I love the colors but they will obscure most any pattern you use. This looks like it will do the trick.

I like Addi lace needles. I had been resisting due to the cost but I am now a convert. They are wonderful. Hate the regular addi's though.

I knit my socks one at a time on 2 circs in the winter, when sleeves catch the DPNs. I tend to fall back on the good old DPNs in the warmer months, though. I can do magic loop but don't see the attraction.....
